This is a document given to applicants to provide them with a bit more information about Peace Corps Nicaragua. In this document, there is a section when PCVs write words of encouragement to the invitees. Here is what I wrote:

CONGRATS! I remember receiving my invitation like it was yesterday. I immediately started researching everything I could find on Nicaragua. Since I had already spent most of the application process exhausting various RPCVs with my detailed questions, I poured over websites, newspaper articles, blogs, really just about anything I could find related to my future home. After a few weeks of devouring everything I could get my hands on, I finally realized that when I actually moved to Nicaragua I would find out all this information first hand! It's great to "be prepared" but looking back, more of that research time should've been spent eating soft-pretzels, dark chocolate, baby spinach, Thai food, exploring New York City, spending time with my grandparents and small cousins, and enjoying the small mechanical wonders of my life back home (washing machine, AC, DVR, wifi everywhere).

Another big congrats on having the patience and flexibility to make it this far through the process! Don't lose that, it will come in handy throughout training and volunteer service. As will a positive attitude and the ability to think outside the box. Just so we're clear, your being invited to serve as a community health volunteer in amazing country, filled with the most generous people, and at the same time heart-wrenching poverty. Tourists may come spend a week to enjoy the breathtaking natural wonders and well-preserved colonial cities. Short-term volunteers may come to donate tangible items or help with a small construction project. Although you'll have time to see the sights and help with various projects, YOU as a PCV are being asked to dedicate 2 full years integrating yourself in Nicaraguan culture and customs, living as the locals do, sharing stories about your life back home, laughing with your friends over the good times, lending a helping hand during the hard times, all while contributing to improving the health of vulnerable groups in Nicaragua. There's lots of work to be done considering the rising rates of teen pregnancy, new HIV cases, and maternal and infant deaths. These topics will be amongst the obstacles you face in your daily work. But your work might also mean learning the history behindPurisima, helping your host sister memorize a Ruben Dario poem, coaching a friend through a rough patch in his relationship, starting a community bank, or cooking your favorite dish for your neighbors.

As a Maternal and Child Health Volunteer, I lived in a large departmental capital of Chinandega. It was exactly what I wanted in a site. I wanted to be busy and have lots of opportunities to work with different health related organizations. There's plenty of work between the 11 health centers, numerous NGOs and non profits, and the 2 casa maternas. Theres no "normal" day for me and I love the flexibility that I have in my schedule! Every day I'm working on a different project or event with a different group. Some of the projects I'll remember most include: An HIV themed street play where a youth group acted out the play while young musicians played background music; introducing yoga therapy for children to my local branch of Los Pipitos (an NGO that works with disabled children); helping a group of 20 dynamic youth promoters prepare for their radio show related to sexual and reproductive themes; and planning a HIV fair in our new mall with others PCVs. I also managed to find secondary activities with an academy of music, a local salsa dance group, and a few peace corps committees. Outside of work, I have an amazing Nica family, considerate and wonderful neighbors. I really have come to crave nica food, salsa dancing and can even play a few Nicaraguan folk songs on my violin. When I need to de-stress I've been able to hang out with the phenomenal people (Nicas and PCVs) who have become a part of the strong support system that I have here in country. I've made a pretty happy life for myself in the time that I've been here. With any luck, these people will continue to be a involved in my life for many, many years to come. And since every single person in Nicaragua seems to have a Facebook account, I'm sure that will help immensely with the communication process after I leave!

So, by now you're probably thinking, how can I pack everything I might ever need if my life will include so many things. I remember making lists upon lists of things I should remember to pack based on PCV, RPCV, and other recommendations. Surprisingly enough, my baggage wasn't overweight when I boarded the plane for staging. I'm pretty sure I wanted to bring my own kitchen sink! (you know, just in case they didn't sell one in country). Packing for 2 years seemed incredibly overwhelming then, but really Nicaragua has everything you need (and even some of the things you want!). So, don't worry. You'll find a way to get what you need and, most importantly, you'll learn to be happy with what you have.

A few things that have helped to keep me sane are:

My Laptop- I Love sharing music /photos from back home with my nicaraguan friends

Dresses & Mascara- Which help me feel pretty and feminine even when i'm sweaty and covered in dirt and dust

Rosin & Sheet Music- Very necessary when I'm teaching the violin to my students

Dancing Shoes- For when I'm dancing Salsa and Bachata with friends

Uno cards & Decks of Cards- My neighbors love to play and learn new games!

There's so much more so say about being a PCV in Nicaragua, but i'll leave some stuff for you to figure out once you're here. In your hands you have an invitation to serve in Nicaragua. In your future awaits an amazing adventure. Just know this adventure will be filled with smiles, tears, sweat, challenges, change, development and (hopefully) personal satisfaction. Your Peace Corps experience will be everything you make it and not the least as you expect it to be- and that's the beauty of Peace Corps.

Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-78690627592155676212013-01-16T14:17:00.006-05:002013-01-16T14:17:57.439-05:00Work Updates...At 9 weeks out and about 2 years since I started Peace Corps. I'm just about wrapping up every project I have...

MINSA-
For 2 years… I assisted with the ongoing activities of the 11 health centers in Chinandega. Naturally, I worked in some centers much more than others. My job generally included educating the general public about disease prevention, helping with health fairs, brigades, vaccination campaigns, HIV testing, youth workshops, health promoter trainings, etc I also created educational materials and encouraged the use of more dynamic, interactive methods in teaching about health promotion and disease prevention. In association with MINSA I was able to successfully apply for 2 VAST grants to help fund projects related to HIV/AIDS.

Sustainability Plan- I plan on leaving the majority of my charlas, Spanish manuals, and health pamphlets with the health center. I figure since my counterparts have seen me use the majority of them in workshops we've given together, they will be best put to use there.

Music School-
For 2 years… I taught violin and mentored young musicians with the goal that they would come to love their chosen instrument, be inspired to grow as a musician and develop an appreciation for the learning process as it relates to music. I also worked with the Music School on a street theater play related to HIV. This play was written and directed by the music school director. He also organized the musical arrangement. My only responsibility was to secure funding and facilitate communication between the various institutions involved.

Sustainability Plan- I'm planning a mini-workshop to teach the students a few advanced techniques (Tuning their instrument, Vibrato, Shifting, Sight-Reading. I made copies of few music books that they can continue to use to develop their talents, as well as lots of sheet music.
I'm also hoping that because I played a small role in the development of the HIV street theater production, it will happen again and again for years to come.

Los Pipitos-
For 2 years… I worked with the therapists and parents of Los Pipitos to encourage healthier eating and hygiene habits. Last Year, I started working on a radio show and doing appearances on TV with them as well, discussing many of the same themes as I did in their offices. In addition, I brought information regarding yoga therapy to their attention and now it is slowly becoming apart of the services they offer their clients.

Sustainability Plan- I copied pages out of the Yoga therapy manual and translated these exercises to Spanish. I have also written all the radio tips that I've given into a notebook that will be left with the NGO. Hopefully, they will continue to use them long after I'm gone. As for the TV show, im just enjoying my 15mins of fame before I head off to the states. They will be able to use the radio notes if they choose, but they have a variety of interesting topics stockpiled for their TV audience.

Casa Materna-
For 2 years… I promoted disease prevention and discussed health information related to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum issues. I also would do breathing and stretching exercises weekly to get the pregnant ladies up and moving. At time, we would do arts and crafts or chat about cultural issues, or dance or do many other activities. My main job was to bring an activity that would help the women to feel a little less bored in the Casa materna.

Sustainability Plan- Ive made a health manual from a bunch of charlas so that the women have some reading material when they are bored. I also plan on making copies of all the health videos that I have so that the nurses can continue playing the educational videos even when I'm gone.

There were other activities that I did, but there were very many ways to ensure they would be sustainability after I'm gone, which is why they weren't included in this post.
Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-66779867215074373842013-01-11T13:32:00.000-05:002013-01-11T13:32:05.594-05:00For me, Christmas in Nicaragua means...: Lots of fireworks all month long
: Houses have nativity scenes and Christmas trees
In this case, its that much more interesting to see what she thinks, having just finished up her own peace corps service in Panama.
Here's how their trip went based on the imaginary journal (a la Bridget Jones) I kept during the trip...

Jan 1, 2013
11am My father calls me and tells me that Leon & Leon will land at the Managua airport at 9pm, not 6pm like I told their taxi based on previous information. I panic! Jan 1 is an international holiday. People don't like to work super late on regular days and now on I'm asking for a late night on a worldwide holiday…ack! ugh! What if the taxi cant pick up my family up that late at night!

5pm The plane has taken off. Thankfully, Leon and Leon are both on the plane this time, Managua-bound. They got lucky and were upgraded to first class! Lucky for me, the taxi has agreed to meet them at the airport and bring them to Leon City. I kick back and relax. Maybe I'll take a hot shower and watch a little hotel cable. =)

9:21pm I start to wonder where my family is. I know the plane landed at 9pm. The taxi wasn't there since they told me they were landing at 9:30pm. I panic! That means 30mins waiting in the shady-ness that is Managua at night. You could lose your passport and wallet in less time than that. Its good they both speak a lil spanish, hopefully thats enough to avoid any creepsters. Its a good thing no means no spanish as well. Hopefully they weren't abducted inside the airport. That'd be terrible!

9:28pm My family has called! YAY! They are alive and in the taxi I sent for them. Hopefully, he reminds them to keep their windows rolled up so nothing sketchy happens in Managua. I return to hotel cable and keep half-watching bad detective shows. This is great!

11:21pm I run into my Uncles arms! Thankful that he has all his organs. I also give my cousin a huge bear hug. The human trafficking mobsters might've tried to hold him for ransom or something. Anyway, I can stop thinking about that. They both made it to Leon!

11:45pm My uncle's brought me M&Ms and Combos! I am very happy about this development. Definitely a close second to hugging my family. Maybe this moment ties for first...not sure, its been a very emotional day!

Jan 2, 2013
7am My body keeps doing this weird thing where it wakes me up early after it thinks i've gotten enough sleep. I check my email, Facebook, and look over at my uncle and cousin, both passed out on the beds still asleep. They made it to Nicaragua!! Hurrah!

10am Breakfast time. I do a little dance. Hands down my favorite meal of the day. We are headed to one of my favorite breakfast places in Nicaragua. So excited for the family to try Gallo Pinto and other nicaraguan delicacies. I'm getting my usual. They both want to try a Nica Breakfast (Gallo Pinto, Eggs, Nica Cheese, Fried Plantain, and a tortilla). Yummy, Yummy Breakfast!

10:37am hmm, well at least I enjoyed breakfast… I guess Gallo Pinto is an acquired taste? Well, at least my uncle liked the maduro frito and my cousin loved the fresh fruit!

11am We are doing a walking tour of Leon, admiring the churches, the markets, the people, other the tourists. Its so nice catching up with my family!

11:12am- Eh...Uncle, Cousin, just go ahead and step around the bolo (drunk guy). They are usually harmless when passed out like that.

12:15pm We check into our private cabana at the Hostal Mariposa and start to enjoy Nicaragua's finest rum- Flor de Cana. Nica libres start flowing. Now we're all kicking back and relaxing! Cousin Leon takes a nap. All is well!

4:30pm We head out to the beach, Las Penitas, to meet up with other volunteers and have dinner. I'm glad we are getting here in time for the sunset. I'm sure its going to be beautiful!

6:45pm This fried fish looks delicious! This is going to be a great meal. Its also pretty cool that my uncle and cousin get to interact with so many different volunteers and hear about their experiences in Nicaragua. For such a short trip they are meeting a whole lot of people.

8:30pm wow... im prettttty bad a playing pool. But at least we are all having a good time being horrible at this game!

11:25pm Time to head back to the hostel. Its late im tired.

11:40pm Crook! Thief! That taxi definitely overcharged us. I understand the need to make money, but you should not take advantage of tourists. Im going to ask about the price he charged us in the morning, it just doesn't seem right!

1am The internet goes out. Leon & Leon are saddened by this. I am already asleep.

Jan 3, 2013
7am Surprise, Surprise. I'm up bright and early. The sun hasn't event brushed its teeth yet. Why cant I sleep in until 9am or something?

9:25am I was right! He overcharged us by about 100cordobas. Thats a lot!

9:30am Heading towards Chinandega. First we took the sun- soaked local bus, than the sweaty interlocal micro bus. I hope they are getting a better sense of how I get around. I wish I was nica enough to let more than 1 person ride on my bike. Ive seen families of 4 all riding on the same bike. We could definitely all fit on my bike. Leon is a bit far though…

11:30am OMG! wow..wow..what the..how..OMG OMG OMG!.. what?!

11:41am no but really.. this is so ridiculous..OMG! how am i going to clean all of this ash of ALL of my belongings?! Also, i wish that i had already packed a bag and that my house wasn't a pigsty! I would've like my family to not have had to wait while I waded through the ash looking for dusty stuff to send with them back home. Jeez!

12:45pm Leon is taking a nap (even though he work up 3 hours ago) and uncle leon is helping me clean by sweeping the floor. I am trying to figure out what I wont be using in the next few months. I'd like to send a bag back home with my family. Aha! yes, I can send some clothes and my hammocks. Oh! the novel in spanish and the jewelry I don't wear as often. Thats enough. A few things less to think about when im packing up for good.

1pm We are at Dona Gloria house eating Indio Viejo! This is a traditional nicaraguan dish. Leon and Leon like the food! In fact, its a contender for best home home cooked meal they've had in Nicaragua. (Its going to be the only thing on the list.. but thats besides the point)

2:20pm we walk back to Dona Gloria house for photos. You have to document trips like this. Youve also got to introduce the family to everyone who lives on your block. This starts the beginning of introductions to my neighbors.

2:50pm We finally have introduced the family to all the neighbors on my block. Now off the get massages and pedicures! Its been a long 2 days...

7pm We have been properly massaged and pampered. Next stop, FOOD! I choose the restaurant Al Carbon, because I don't think gallo pinto is a staple on the menu AND my family really enjoys good steak.

7:45pm Leon and Leon decide to try and get a quick pickup game of basketball in before dinner. They Win! I cheer gleefully from the sidelines.

9pm We are discussing the best times and the worst times of the past few days. Im glad they made it down for a visit and I'm happy to hear what they think about the trip. The family says they really enjoyed their trip! My uncle was happy to see my smile and meet my family/ friends in Nicaragua. My cousin says he has learned not to take things for granted and that this may be the best trip he's gone on since beginning his job with the airline. Thats a pretty good way to end the trip. =)

Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-17472019943964719732013-01-02T00:52:00.001-05:002013-01-02T00:52:37.765-05:00World Aids Day 2012!Every year on Dec 1 the world comes together to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS hoping that one day we might find a way to stop the spread of this disease. There is no cure, but scientists are hard at work and every year new advances are made that bring us closer to a solution. Until then, its super important that the public is aware of how to prevent the spread of HIV.

Chinandega, as I've said in other posts, has a HUGE problem with HIV. In fact, our department takes first place when discussing new cases found for the department. For this reason, the volunteers decided to have a HIV health fair in the new Chinandega mall.

Together we organized a health fair complete with informational pamphlets and the opportunity to get tested. We performed 33 HIV rapid tests, had education games, trivia questions, condom demonstration contests, dance contests, a circus act, a vibrant story explaining how HIV is transmitted from person to person, and give-a-ways. There was an amazing turnout and interest from the public. It was also great fun to bring volunteers from all different sectors together to work on this issue that affects us all.

Here are a few photos from the event:

University in Nicaragua is a BIG DEAL. Successfully completing and graduating university is something to be celebrated in any culture. It's in part because the costs of education is so expensive in terms of money and time. In Nicaragua, there's also a sentiment amongst youth that even if they spend the 5 years studying for their university degree they might still not find a job in their field. Its discouraging to hear students graduating high school, not thinking about college or considering higher education because of this dearth of employment. This sentiment also exist amongst youth in the states. Its disappointing that learning for learning's sake is losing its value because the cost of education is unrealistic for many youth. Hopefully, things will change for the better whether it be through education reform or a revitalization among the youth.

Continuing, Im so proud of my friends for finishing! These college graduations (like many others) came with a a certain
number of invitations, mass service, a family escort into the
auditorium, family dinners, lots of waiting while the names are being read, and crazy applause when your graduate is crossing the stage!
These ladies made me so proud!! Ive worked with both of them from day one and now they've performed in their very first concert. They had been practicing for a couple on 4 holiday songs (Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Joy to the World, & Deck the Halls) and finally had the opportunity to show their stuff at our holiday concert in the Chinandega Mall.
Here comes Lindsey, the Baby RobberApparently, about 2 months before I got to site a women who looks like me entered the local hospital and robbed her newborn nephew. There had been a disagreement between the baby's mother and the father. Because of this, the fathers family thought it necessary to rob the baby out of the hospital.

Fast forward 4 months- I've been working with pregnant women in Chinandega for about 2 months at this point and Ive decided that I'd like to visit them after they've given birth in the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital the guards give me the cold shoulder and won't let me enter the hospital. Finally, after a week or 2 or trying/sweet talking/thinking about how to sneak pass they let me enter. Turns out they thought I was the baby robber, back for another snatch! AND to top it off when the nurses saw me coming they would tell the women to hide their children because the baby robber was coming!

But I think the absolute best part is that this was going on for months without me having the slightest idea...

Now, I hardly enter the hospital but when I do the women do not fear that I might kidnap their children. I like to think of this as a story of integration and acceptance.Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-49018089450610312072013-01-01T21:48:00.001-05:002013-01-01T21:48:05.061-05:00The nastiest way to wake up...At 6:47am a roach fell on my face.

Since I was not awake prior to the incident it took me a moment to realize what was crawling across my forehead. I sleepily swept it off. Then about 3 seconds later I screamed, jumped out of bread and chased the creepy crawler with my shoe and a broom.

At 7:01am I took a deep breath and then thoroughly washed my face to remove as roach residue.

At 7:02am I began my morning routine and subsequently began my day.Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-16757379930109305882013-01-01T21:36:00.002-05:002013-01-01T21:36:58.016-05:00Panamaaaa!

I've been busy writing my resume, description of service, site report,
holiday emails, and working on other manuals. I don't want to write very
much more, but I do want this blog to be a bit more up-to-date. So here goes...

Panama was an amazing trip! It all started because of my friend Carolyn, who lived across the hall from me during freshman year, got stationed in Panama for her Peace Corps service. Carolyn was assigned to be a environmental health volunteer. Eventually,
she found out her site would be a rural indigenous village. To read
more about her service click here. Once I got my invitation to serve in Nicaragua, we promised to meet up and explore each others countries since they are so close to each other.

The trip began just as Carolyn was getting ready to finish up her service. I used the very comfortable and very friendly Ticabus. The ride was about 30hours long but I was fed well along the way and slept in the whole row of seats that I had to myself. In short, I was more than content.

The first couple of days were spent in Panama City. I met other PCVs from Carolyn's group, took a tour of the city, and even went out salsa dancing to a great live band. The capital was so.. modern, metropolitan. It was a refreshing change from the grunge of Managua. We walked by the fish market, did a little last minute souvenir shopping and hung out with other PCVs.

We spent the weekend traveling through the center of the country. There was a feria de sombrero pintado, painted hat festival. These traditional hats are woven in this region of Panama and really popular. So much so, in fact, that there was a huge gathering of people that came out for this festival and a parade. All the floats were beautifully done, and most floats passed along with Panamanians doing a traditional dance alongside the float. It seemed like a basic 2 step dance, just to a upbeat, lively music. Everyone was literally dancing in the streets wearing their favorite hat. I don't know that we have a similar festival in Nicaragua so it was really interesting to be apart of that experience.

Sidenote- Walking from the festival we passed a Jumbo Store. They sell grains and sugar wholesale. We had talked about it earlier in the trip but I didn't really understand it until I saw it for myself. I also realized how much Carolyn loves rice and that Jumbo maybe a contender for her favorite place to buy rice.

During the planning stages of the trip we had talked about visiting each others volunteer sites. Weeelllllll, considering that Carolyn had moved out of her site 2 weeks before, it wouldve been a bit weird to just reappear when she was supposed to be long gone. So we visited a similar site of a another volunteer in her group.

We wore the traditional garb, carried our necessities in the bag, and trekked through the mud. The campo life of Panama is much different than my experience in a city. Her village built her living space. I live in an apartment. Rice was involved in most of her meals. A sushi place just opened up and we have Burger King. She had no sitemates (other PCVs living in the same site). I have 3 sitemates and we all live on the same block. The list goes on.

The last leg of the of the trip was to the Caribbean side of Panama in a town called Bocas del Toro. Its a slice of paradise. Having just visited the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua there were many similarities that I saw, the biggest 2 being the presence of English speakers and darker skinned Panamanians. We spent a few days soaking up the sun, snorkeling, swimming, dancing to live bands, enjoying seafood, and loving the beauty of the coast.

I also dont really enjoy being stuck in Managua. So I took a evacuation vacation to Rio San Juan, which is the river that provides part of the southern border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
I was fortunate enough to be able to visit RSJ during their annual international fishing tournament. Honestly, I'm a lot better at eating fish than catching it, but it was still really interesting to see some of the fish that were caught during the competition. Fisherman came from a variety of countries to compete in the tournament. All over the Americas and I think maybe as far as Europe...
I also got to catch up with the elusive Rio San Juan Volunteers, all of whom are awesome. I almost never get to see them since our sites are so far away. We visited El Castillo, the Solentainame Islands, and Boca de Sabalos, in addition to spending time enjoying the festivities in San Carlos (the department capital and location of the fish fair). Another fun surprise was that Fuzion 4, a cumbia band I enjoy was performing. I danced on a stage with the band...and won a CD!
After a short boat ride, we arrived at the Solentanaime Islands, which was the home of a artists colony...leaving a legacy of brightly painted, beautifully done handicrafts made from surprisingly light wood. I have a little butterfly as a souvenir! It was really interesting to visit the island. We wondered from house to house just watching the artists work on their figurines or paintings...
I also spent a day visiting El Castillo, which was a fort in whats possibly one of the cutest little towns Ive seen in Nicaragua. My friend from Chinandega is living and working in El Castillo for 2 years with an NGO, so I got to catch up with her as well. The NGO does a bunch of projects in relation to fort preservation and river conservation. Also, she is really into Nica history and so she gave me a full tour of the fort!*( For more history visit- El Castillo Information)
FINALLY, he made sent me his flight information and shortly after he was here, in the flesh!

We spent a few days touring Granada, Chinandega, and a beach. We saw the churches, ate good food, saw volcanos, played on the beach, participated in the mini-purisima in my site, talked with my PCV friends, and toured my site. He met my Nica friends and family and we passed by my different work areas. Everyone was really excited to meet him and I think that helped my dad to have a better idea of what I do as a volunteer. We also did a whole lot of catching up!

Here are a few photos of noteworthy moments in my dads trip!

Chinandega has a "water park" really its 2 pools with 6 slides. I visited for the first time in August. Reminded me a little of being home for the summer.

The idea for this workshop stemmed from a comment made by a PCV about how her counterpart was also trying new hairstyles and it just never seemed to work or make her happy. I jokingly offered to come over to her site and give her a hair tutorial. From there, we kept toying with the idea until we realized that it would make a GREAT workshop and could incorporate discussions on self-image, self-confidence, inner beauty, at home beauty methods and more. Traveling to her site would take some planning, considering she lives on the complete opposite coast of Nicaragua, but it would also be an amazing experience considering how different the Atlantic coast is in comparison to the pacific coast.

One of the biggest differences is in Chinandega, there are very little black Nicaraguans. However, where we did the workshop (on the Atlantic Coast) there are many, many, black people. Because of this, it was interesting to participate in the conversations held regarding self-esteem and conceptions of beauty. Another huge difference is the language. Many natives are bilingual in Spanish and creole English. We held 4 sessions in total and no 2 were alike in terms of conversation or language used.

The main goals of the hair taller were:

• Encourage young adults and children to develop their inner beauty, while stressing the importance of maintaining a high self-esteem.
• Discuss barriers and outside pressures that may affect self-esteem/ self-confidence.
• Teach elementary school students and college students how to maintain their natural hair as a means to increasing their overall confidence with respect to their physical appearance, hopefully leading to a boost in self-esteem.
• Improve general health by promoting and discussing the many benefits of natural beauty and natural lifestyle.

We started by showing "Good Hair" by Chris Rock which is a documentary film that goes into detail about a number of important themes, including: the dangers of chemically processing your hair, the benefits and drawbacks of natural hair, the methods used by advertisers in the beauty industry, as well as the way ones appearance can drastically affect their self-esteem.

After viewing the video we started a discussion about these topics, including similarities and differences in Nicaragua and on the different coasts of Nicaragua. This was always the most interesting part for me. I remember hearing comments on how the viewers had no idea black women relaxed their hair to make it straight (mentioned by both Mestizo Nicaraguans and other Americans volunteers) or how young girls looked forward to being able to "style" their hair when its straight since its "prettier". There was even a young teenage girl that stated she would stop relaxing her hair now that she knows how harmful the chemical can be for her health. At the college campus film showing, we even started to discuss the industry standard and how that's starting to change a bit, but how we as consumers need to bring out more change.

When I need new clothes, I go to my nearest ropa americana. Its basically a thrift store filled with unwanted clothes shipped down from the states.

I'd like you to imagine the thrift store nearest you. Most likely your picturing some huge warehouse filled with outdated, slightly moldy, over-sized clothing donated to the goodwill or salvation army by a soccer mom. You've tried shopping there a few times, but found the sheer vastness of bad clothing a bit overwhelming. OR Its possible you conjured a vintage store or consignment shop with beautiful pieces and heirloom jewelry from a range of decades. A place where you can ask about the story behind the clothing or the last person who owned a particular item. OR, like many, many Americans you may just buy brand new clothing when you want to update your look and don't venture into thrift stores unless you are costume shopping.

Thrift Stores can be a headache. BUT, every once in a while if you keep searching you might find a great item at a perfect price. I enjoy the thrill of ropa americana shopping but I can only go when the conditions are right, meaning: 1) I hate all my clothes and NEED something new, 2) I have plenty of free time to wander and scour the racks, 3) I have a set budget. If one of these things is missing I wind up wasting time or coming back with disappointing purchases.

Lucky for me, we've got lost of old clothing here in Chinandega. I've found some amazing items during various scavenger hunts around the city. For example, on my most recent birthday I spent $4 on a Diane von Furstenburg wrap
dress and a $6 J. Crew Silk Shirt. Ive also spent $5 on brand new jean
shorts, $3 on a day dress, $1 on a few cute shirts and 50 cents on some fun skirts.

In terms of pricing, I think the amount you pay corresponds more to brand of the items than the condition on the same item. American Eagle, Aeropostale, Hollister, etc were all big brands here for a while and you'd would've have trouble paying less than $10-15 for a shirt no matter the condition. On the same shelf you could easily buy a $2 banana republic or American Apparel or H&M shirt. Recently, I've run across ratty Forever21 clothing that cost more in ropa americana stores than it would if you were to have it shipped to your house in the states from the actual company.

Any who, ropa americana shopping here makes me miss thrift stores in the states....well, maybe I just miss the organization of the thrift stores. Most of the time I'm sorting between huge piles of semi washed clothing haphazardly tossed on the floor. If I get lucky, I'll find myself meticulously combing through a rack of clothing that holds clothing for small male children, pregnant women, and exercise enthusiasts from the 80s. And if I am super lucky, there's an attendant thrusting a basket into my hands and telling me a green velvet vest with red leopard trim looks great on people with my complexion and is perfect for Christmas =/

Because ropa americanas tend to hold a hodge-podge of random item, you never know what your fellow citizens might wear. Ive seen shirts advertising pineapple soda from the Bahamas (Junkanoo!), too many Old Navy 4th of July shirts, and my very own neighbor owns a shirt usually worn by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. (see below) He has no idea what the shirt means- His mom just thought it'd be a good fit.
Now, that I live in the ring of fire, that has changed a little bit. San Cristobal is the tallest volcano in Nicaragua and is located in the
department of Chinandega. Regardless of where I am in my site, San
Cristobal is there- looming, protecting. Its beautiful to see from afar and I often take time to appreciate its immensity. Its active, meaning there was always a possibility for an eruption, but to be honest, I actually didn't think too much of the possibility of that occurring during my service. And well, it happened! Volcano San Cristobal erupted 3 times this past Saturday!

In the 20+ months I've lived here I've never seen the Volcano smoking like it was Saturday morning. Here are a few photos:

All this volcano activity/evacuation happened so fast- It was really overwhelming! My Saturday morning went something like this:

8:35am After sleeping in late, my neighbor wakes me up. The repair guy is here to fix my front door.
8:55am Received a call from a PCV. She tells me to look out my window at San Cristobal.
8:56am I look out my front door and realize San Cristobal is going off! It's emitting too much smoke and it's much darker in color than I ever remember seeing.
8:57am I call the Safety and Security officer to let him know the Volcano is going crazy.
9:25am After talking to the Country Director and the Safety and Security Officer, I send out the evacuation message to all PCVs in Chinandega.
10am Emergency bag packed. No time for a shower or breakfast. Contacted family at home. Headed to meet up with the other PCVs. Run out the apartment, leaving the repair man in my house, still fixing my door with my landlord.
3:30pm Arrive in Managua. Receive a briefing on the Volcano & Earthquake activity happening. We're all told that were headed to Granada until its safe to go back home.
6:30pm Arrive in Granada. Contact family back home and in site. Eat. Sleep. Think about all the craziness.
There was a donation of baseball supplies to an NGO that works to prepare/send Nicaraguan youth to the Major Leagues. Afterwards, Ambassador Powers took the time out of her Saturday afternoon to visit my sitemate and I in Chinandega. She visited each of our homes, talked with our host families, and we did a tour of the Casa Materna.

Afterwards, we went out to lunch. She spent time asking each of us about our service and what we miss most about life in the states. We also talked about life after Peace Corps. The ambassador explained how she came into her career and where shes been in her time with the state department. She's worked all over as a career diplomat and it was really interesting to hear her persepective on Nicaragua. All in all, it was an honor to have spent time with her and have her visit my piece of Chinandega!Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-49530065982926867002012-07-31T18:39:00.002-04:002012-07-31T18:39:20.759-04:00Festival de Maiz! The Festival de Maiz is held the first weekend in July and is basically a festival all about corn. Any meal, drink, snack, or dance corn based (yes, i said dance) is present. I don't think I can name all the items that involve corn, but my favorites are:

Tiste- a chocolately corn drink. Best served ice cold
Indio-Viejo- a thick vegetable stew with a corn base. Best served with hot rice and a fresh tortilla (also made from ground corn).
Pupusas- a treat from our neighbors in El Salvador. Its corn dough filled with oozy cheese (or beans or chicken or fried pig skin) and shaped into a thin disc. Once its evenly cooked and golden brown on both sides its best served topped with a cabbage/carrot salad and a little spicy sauce.
Atol- a sweet dessert made from corn. Depending on who makes it it can be porridge form or gelatin like. Sometimes its even pink! (if dye is added)

There were so many more options! Luckily, vendors selling corn drinks, atol and tortilla often pass by my front door every morning, Indio-Viejo is a staple at the casa materna and there is a pupusa restaurant in the central park- So I never have to go far for my favorites!Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-23492271973113613502012-07-31T18:36:00.003-04:002012-07-31T18:36:30.877-04:00Not your Ringling Brothers Circus…not at allFor many people, the idea of a circus brings to mind a few common images. Maybe its acrobats flying high, their bodies forming all kinds of odd shapes in the sky. Or, it could be red-nosed clowns spilling out of tiny cars laughing hysterically. Or, it could be the exotic animals- elephants, lions, tigers. Or, it could be any of a thousand things depending on the circus.

If some asked me what I remember about my first Nicaraguan circus is will be:
- The extravagant rope pulley system used to haul the acrobat in the sky for 30 seconds. There were 4 men involved in pulling, just one guy (a little guy at that!) into the air. While in the sky, the acrobat did 1 or 2 somersaults, something akin to what a 7year does on a playground. Nothing circus-like. This went on for about 8-10mins. After a while we stopped clapping. I think the crowd, as a collective, was ready to move on to the next act.

- The clowns, who were funny in a very vulgar way. If i were to give a movie rating, the act probably started around PG-13 and ended near NC-17. Not too mention that some of their act including a barely covered curvy teenage girl strutting across the stage, to the amusement of all the men in the audience. It also got really weird at times...

- There were animals! An ostrich, was was lead around the stage 2 or 3 times and a lion, which stayed in his cage. Ive heard chisme (gossip) that in other locations, small puppies were fed to the lion. Not PETA-friendly at all.

- The biggest difference would be that the teletubbies and characters from ice age made an appearance on stage and danced awkwardly while beckoning all kids under 10 to come give them hugs. It was like disney-land, only creepier.

Ill put up photos soon!Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-45003890501434748232012-07-31T18:29:00.001-04:002012-07-31T18:29:16.984-04:00Happy Independence Day America!First, let me start out by saying that 4th of July wasn't really a huge deal when I was growing up. When I was younger, my family and I would visit a family friend for his backyard barbecue. We would eat ribs, burgers, hot dogs, watermelon, salads and then swim in his pool while watching the fireworks explode above. Although, I have fond memories of these parties I cant say that celebrating this holiday has been a family tradition...

Last year for the 4th, to commemorate the day, I explained the cultural significance of this holiday at the Casa Materna. Thats it. I don't even think I ate a hamburger. There were a few PCVs who went to the American embassy barbecue and returned with pansas (belly, stomach) full of hamburgers, hotdogs, and other treats. They said they had a good time.

This year, I decided I wanted to celebrate being an American! I realllllly wanted to celebrate 4th of July at the Embassy Barbecue. But that just didn't happen. Last year there were tickets available for PCVs. This year is seems that wasnt an option and the price wasnt in my budget. So, I had a BBQ in front of my house! We made huge hamburgers, french fries, salad and had dessert in the form of cake and cookies. It was a delicious meal and I was happy to celebrate my country. It also served as a way to explain why the day was important to my nica neighbors- who thought I was celebrating my birthday!
Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3604995407362245668.post-41805360445294790272012-07-31T18:22:00.003-04:002012-07-31T18:22:52.806-04:00Somos una Gran Familia/ We're One Big Family!Sooo, I have started working with a radio show! Los Pipitos is an organization that works with disabled children and their parents. They've recently been given the opportunity to have a weekly 30min radio show where they can discuss prevention, treatment, and the specifics of common disabilities.

My role on the show is to discuss general nutrition. Its been a really fun challenge! I have talked about ways to include more vegetables in your diet, motivating your child to try new foods, and nutrition deficiencies (Vitamin A, Iron, Water). Also, I write down all the tips so that when I leave in 8 months, Los Pipitos can continue using the tips on their show.

If you're in the Chinandega area and interested in tuning in: Radio Station 91.1 and the show, called somos una gran familia, is every Monday 4-4:30pm!Qué será, será...http://www.blogger.com/profile/10874302273756743288noreply@blogger.com1
